Harley sat at the bar of Skipper’s, a local dive bar, about ten minutes from Savannah’s place. It wasn’t very busy in the bar aside from a few regulars. The bartender got along well with them, joking easily and enquiring about their families.

“Ma’am, can I get you anything?”

“I’ll have a Makers and Coke.”

The bartender smiled and grabbed a rock glass, filling it with ice. She poured whiskey generously over the ice, at least a four-second pour. She took the fountain gun and added Coke to the glass, adding a short straw at the end. She placed the glass in front of her, and Harley slid over a twenty.

Harley pulled the straw from the glass and set it on the bar. She took a long drink from the glass and thought about the day. The entire day had been spent interviewing everyone at the hotel. The local sheriff’s department had offered to help and sent over some guys to talk to guests. Sadly, for the hotel, some of those guests immediately checked out of the hotel. She couldn’t really blame them. Even though it wasn’t the hotel’s fault, people wanted to feel safe. They questioned everyone and even called people who had already checked out. Not one person saw anything. The Butcher’s timing was epic because there wasn’t a soul who had any idea what had happened in that parking lot that day. It wasn’t long before the news crews started showing up, and then it hit the stations. At least there was a video out there now of the pair. She could only hope that someone would recognize seeing them somewhere else. Too much time had passed, and she worried that they were too late. The Butcher never kept his victims for long. They had run the tags and put an APB out on the car, but so far, nothing had come up. All they could do now was wait, and so she decided she needed a drink.

She turned and looked at a grizzly-looking gentleman at the end of the bar, a grey labrador at his feet. She watched as he ordered two different beers, a Coors Light and a Bud Zero. The bartender brought him both, and he proceeded to pour the Bud Zero in the dog’s bowl. She raised an eyebrow when the man made eye contact with her. He shrugged and said, “Guys night out.”

She smiled even though she didn’t feel like it. She turned back to her drink, staring into the glass. She gulped the whole thing and then ordered another.

It had only been three months since she had been on the island, but it still felt like it was yesterday. Her family had encouraged her to relax and take some time off before jumping into a business. But she couldn’t do it. Her skin had prickled with nervous energy. She had nightmares for weeks after returning home. Every time that she did take a minute to relax, horrible images would crop up in her head. Her friends mutilated bodies, the room of severed heads, the graves in the mines.
